Towards better legal practice:

Over 300 attend pioneer FAKLA symposium

A one-day symposium on Legal Practice and Procedure under the Cameroon Judicial System organized by the Fako Lawyers Association (FAKLA) has ended in Buea with legal minds schooled on the need for continuous legal education.
                Chaired by the president of the South West Court of Appeal, Lord Justice BechemEyong ENEKE, the symposium was aimed at cementing the ever necessary need for legal education in Cameroon.
                Serving as a forum for the exchange of ideas and brainstorming on the changing dynamics of the law, the gathering brought together legal minds from the Fako Lawyers Association FAKLA, Meme Lawyers Association MELA, North West Lawyers Association NOWELA, members of the Cameroon Bar Council, Judges, Senior Advocates, Law professors and Law students of the University of Buea. 
                Talking to the press after the pioneer event, FAKLA president, Barrister Nkongho Felix AgborBalla, said the symposium was the first in a series of conferences that FAKLA will organize in due course.
                “Our objective is to strengthen the lawyers, and make relations between the bar and the bench stronger and better,” AgborBalla said.

The constantly changing nature of the law also served as principal raison-d’etre of the forum, that saw South West Court of Appeal President, Justice BechemEyongEneke emphasizing on the need for continuing education for lawyers and legal Luminaries of the South West Region in particular. 
                The over six-hour schooling was charged with four main presentations namely: “Criminal Procedure: Instituting and Perfecting an Appeal against a Criminal Judgment, Seeking Bail for the convict pending hearing of the Appeal” by Justice Agbor James Eyong; “Civil Procedure: The law and practice of adoption in the common law jurisdiction of Cameroon” by Barrister NgoleMonono; “Execution of Court Judgments: Provision/Execution and stay of Execution: the law, practice and procedure” by Lord Justice Mbeng Martin Ako and finally, “OHADA Law and Practice: Recovering a Debt/Securing the delivery or Restitution of specific personal property,” by Lord Justice Emile Essombe.
                At the end of the Symposium, numerous participants, notably, University of Buea Students and many others including the organizers told The Median Newspaper that the symposium was more than necessary given that it helped them refresh their knowledge with regards to some issues they were confused over. Issues relating to the application of Appeals and the grant of Bail, likewise the clarification on Adoption served as refresher courses to the over-300 participants drown from far and near. 
                At the end of it all, the legal minds left satisfied haven gained bountiful information, which according to them will help strengthen legal practice in Cameroon.
