Two persons have been arrested and detained at the Kumba
Central police station for impersonating as ‘Ambazonia’ soldiers and extorting
money from the population. Tebeck Mark age 28 and Agbor Thomas Junior age 38
were arrested on Wednesday July 18, 2018 and presented to the Meme SDO,
Chamberlin Ntou’ou Ndong.
Tebeck
and Agbor confessed to the security elements and the Meme SDO that they have
been going about threatening and extorting money from the population through
mobile money transactions in the name of the ‘Ambazonia’ struggle.
Both men
confessed to have defrauded at least 12 families while eight other families
they contacted were still to pay in. They admitted to have been feeding fat as
a result of their dubious acts.
Tebeck
Mark, the spokesperson of the group told reporters that he indulged in the
business after migrating to Kumba when their family residence in Kwakwa was
burnt down.
“We go
around visiting business places and getting the phone contacts of their owners.
We then call these numbers and ask our interlocutors to contribute in the war
effort, claiming that we are Ambazonia fighters. That’s what we do day after
day and some do send us money while some hesitate. We have been doing this
since May when this crisis started. I am from Kwakwa and relocated to town when
our house was been burnt down,” Tebeck confessed, adding that they have
collected about FCFA 400 000 thousands from about six persons while 12 others
have been contacted. He said they contacted the last person, a resident of Buea
road Kumba, on 11 July 2018.
The
situation has come to save hundreds of other families who have been under
constant threat to pay huge sums of money to unknown persons claiming to be
fighting for the ‘Ambazonia’ struggle. Before now, news had been circulating
that some well-to-do person in Kumba have fallen in the hands of some thieves
passing for ‘Ambazonia’ fighters.
