The North-West Regional Delegation of Elections Cameroon says there are optimistic of registering many more voters in 2017.
Launching the annual revision exercise in Bamenda on Thursday January 3, the NW Regional Delegate of Elecam, Nga Gasper observed that there are still many North Westerners of voting age that are still not registered while urging them to turn up en masse and enrol in the electoral register for future elections.
Citing the “Bureau Central des Recencement et Etudes de Population, BUCREP, he revealed that the North-West has a voting population of about 900,000 noting that since the Biometric Recompilation Exercise of 2013 up to 2016, the North-West has registered 629,219 electors.
“We can therefore without any qualms conclude that there is still a lot of potential in the North-West Region” the delegate noted with optimism.
Nga Gasper said the North-Westerner is not only politically very sensitive, but also attaches a lot of importance to the democratization process in Cameroon.

He noted  that to ensure the broadest possible participation of the population in the political life of the North-West Region, foster peace and social harmony, enhance economic and social development and promote the emergence of new leaders with innovative ideas, it is always necessary to organize elections whose outcome would reflect the will of the electorate.
“All the stakeholders that is , the population,  political parties, civil society organizations, the judiciary and the administration, must participate in this effort which should cover the entire electoral process,….We have therefore not only encouraged but equally enforced the participatory approach in such a way that the stake holders should not only be spectators but actors”, the delegate added.
The North-West comprises a Regional Delegation, 7 Divisional Branches and 34 Council Branches with a staff strength of 244 permanent workers. There are 34 mixed commissions with a total of 239 commission members representing 20 political parties.
In 2016, they registered 57773 voters of which 26941 of them were women and 30832 were men with 83.53% of the people registered being youths.
During the 2012/2013 biometric recompilation exercise, they registered 506,658 voters, 26,788 voters during the 2014 revision exercise and over 38000 voters in 2015.
These successes according to Nga Gasper were achieved thanks to the dynamism of the staff of the various branches of ELECAM in the North West region.
“My collaborators are ladies and gentlemen of mettle, who despite the rugged nature of the terrain and the symbolic nature of logistic support that come in sporadically, still sacrificed a lot to contribute to the improvement of the statistics on the national voters’ roll. They have equally promised to do even more and could give you all pleasant surprises if given a little push” the delegate observed.
He also revealed that in 2016 they distributed 51509 cards but regretted that they are still in possession of a cumulative total of 44,544 undistributed cards from 2013 to 2016.
“I wish to use this medium to make a strong appeal to the stakeholders here present to take the message home and encourage those who have not yet collected their cards to do so”, he pleaded.
He also announced that the production of electoral registers has been decentralized with the NW Regional hub equipped with printing machines and additional work station and a server.
