Gov’t hails MTN for promoting University sports

The Minister of Higher Education, Chancellor of Academic Orders, Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo has lauded MTN Cameroon for promoting talents in the University Milieu by being the main sponsor of yet another edition of the University games, a yearly sporting jamboree that brings together students from state and private higher institutions of learning in Cameroon
                The 20th edition of the games was played at the University of Bamenda from the 21st to the 29th of April 2017 under the theme “University Games 2017: twenty years of promoting talents for national development, peace, unity and the emergence of Cameroon.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the games on April 29th, Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo thanked MTN and other sponsors for their contribution which undoubtedly enabled the University of Bamenda to host the games especially as they were hosting it for the very first since their creation in 2010.
                According to officials of the National Federation of University Sports, FENASU, MTN provided trophies, medals and allowances to athletes, provided sports equipment to athletes and officials, and organized socio-cultural activities with renowned artist to spice the games amongst others.
                In the 20 years history of the annual sports jamboree, the leader of telecommunications in Cameroon has been sponsor for the 15 consecutive time since 2003.

                “The University Games go beyond sports. Reason why MTN will support fan clubs and offer about 4515 participants amongst whom are 3246 athletes from 19 public and private university institutions, students and other visitors the opportunity to familiarize with the new digital world MTN. Teams of trainers shall be deployed on the ground to engage the public on the use of innovative technologies” a release from the company before the start of the games reads.
                According to the CEO of MTN Cameroon PhilisiweSibiya, sports helps the “hyper motivated athletes to become leaders” of tomorrow.
                “As a leading operator, we have the duty to support them in their development. This justifies our presence yesterday, today and tomorrow. We also have the duty to actively support the University community of Bamenda that is hosting these games for the first time” she observes.
                With the 2018 edition of the games to take place at the University of Maroua, there are hopes that MTN Cameroon will still respect her engagement to support university students towards promoting effort and excellence.
