The government of Cameroon has launched four new projects sponsored by the Islamic Development Bank, IDB.
The projects were launched as part of a one week workshop to build the capacities of project actors and stakeholders on IDB procurement and disbursement procedures.
The Minister Delegate to the MINEPAT, Paul Tasong, sitting in for the Governor of the IDB, and the Representative of the IDB Regional Office, Mamadou Alpha Bah, co-chaired the launching ceremony, at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel, on Thursday, 12 December.
According to the regional representative of the IDB, the objective of the launching workshop was to ensure that all actors and players in the projects chain master the procurement procedures and above all the disbursement procedure of the IDB this, with the aim to ensuring that there are no delays in execution, as well as to ensure that the funds mobilized are used strictly for the purpose for which they were intended.
Financed to the tune of 82 billion FCFA, the four projects bring to 20 the number of IDB sponsored projects in Cameroon, with an active portfolio of 514 billion FCFA, with overall goal to improve the living conditions of the rural populations in Cameroon.
Specifically, the PD-COBIE aims to contribute to improving food security through the modernization of animal husbandry, the marketing of livestock, and the construction of zoo-health infrastructures in the Adamawa, North and Far North regions.
As for the PDRI Logone-Chari, it aims to improve the quality of life of the populations of the Logone and Chari division by upgrading the main value chains and opening up the main production areas.
The Project to Eliminate Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS for its part, aims to significantly reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV and AIDS and build the capacity of staff from selected health districts in six regions of the country – West, East, Adamawa, North, South, Far North.
Meanwhile, the Agricultural Infrastructure And Value Chain Development Project, AIVDP, focuses on the exploitation of the agricultural sector to generate income and create jobs for the rural populations, particularly the youth and women. It hinges on developing the value chain of crops like cocoa, oil palm, cassava and rice.
According to the General Manager of the South West Development Authority, SOWEDA, Dr. Ogork Ntui, the AIVDP seeks to contribute to inclusive growth through enhanced agricultural productivity and value chain development. It targets mostly youths and women with the aim to improving access to basic social/public infrastructure and services notably water, sanitation, basic education and health.
With a view to enhancing the capacity of small holder farmers and cooperatives, the AIVDP seeks to increase household income in rural areas through the creation of over 10.000 permanent jobs.
To the Project Coordinator of the PDRI-LC Phase II, Pr. Ali Madi, “the launching of the projects is good news especially for the most disadvantaged populations of the Far North, who are poverty-stricken and facing problems of insecurity, food scarcity and lack of drinkable water….. Projects in the domains of agriculture, infrastructure and access to drinking water have a direct impact on the lives of the most vulnerable in society.”
Presiding over the launching, Minister Paul Tasong said the launching was a way of celebrating the cooperation between the IDB and Cameroon, a cooperation that is intensifying with the disbursement of 82 billion FCFA to finance four major projects in areas including agriculture, livestock, health and especially the fight against mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and the development of basic infrastructure for improving the lives of vulnerable Cameroonians.
