UN coordinator has condemned killing of aid worker |
Allegra Baiocchi, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in
Cameroon, has strongly condemned the killing of an aid worker, Pascal Ngwayi,
in the Donga Mantung Division in Northwest region. Baiocchi in a release issued
Sunday 1 December, 2019, described the act as regrettable. To her, the deliberate
targeting of the aid worker constitutes a war crime that is as well detrimental
to the population in need.
“I am
deeply saddened by the news of the horrific execution of an aid worker last
night…the deliberate targeting of aid workers constitutes a war crime…”
Baiocchi, said adding that “humanitarian workers risk everything to provide aid
to people most in need. They must be respected and protected, not targeted. The
continued attacks on aid workers only increase the suffering of civilians, as we
are unable to safely carry out operations”
Reports
hold that Ngwayi, a worker with a local NGO and UN partner, was abducted 30
November, 2019 and later killed by his abductors suspected to be separatist
fighters. Ngwayi at the time of his kidnap is said to have been carrying out
humanitarian assessment to ensure needy persons are attended to in the area.
Armed men few months back set ablaze a vehicle that transporting food aids to
suffering persons in the Northwest region while in other areas in the two trouble
regions, beneficiaries of government’s humanitarian aid are attacked.
