Jude Viban Succeeds Simon Lyonga As National President

The Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ has voted to office a new bureau of national executives to pilot the affairs of English-speaking journalists for the next four years with Jude Viban as President. Viban emerged winner in an election that brought together over 300 journalists from across the national territory on Saturday 30 December, 2019 in Douala.
    He emerged winner after crushingly defeating Moki Charles by 126 votes to 92. Viban takes over from Simon Lyonga who declined seeking a second mandate.
    Viban will be assisted by Maimo Davidson as Vice President, Wanchia Cynthia as SG, Bennen Buma Gana as deputy SG, Ursula Ajebe Sone as Treasurer, Nanji Pelagie as Finance Secretary, Frida Egbe as deputy finance secretary, Jatto Richard as PRO, Richard Shengang as social secretary and Tayong Fah Elvis as Auditor.   
    Speaking after his election, Viban promised to revive the association to regain her trade union character as well as implement his election manifesto which focused on advocacy, defending the rights of journalists, training, welfare and career development of our members, organization of annual conventions to chart ways of improving the practice, protecting and promoting the Anglo-Saxon style and personal coaching, annual excellence awards and sporting activities, scholarships, special honours and ‘Hall of Fame Induction’.

    He said he would work to give the association better international exposure.
    “My team will make CAMASEJ a member of a global network that advocates freedom of the press, access to information and defends the rights of journalists.        
    We will become a member of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), and through this network obtain international press cards in collaboration with other journalism associations in Cameroon and abroad,” Viban promised, adding that the association will also look into issues related to unpaid and irregular salaries to workers in the private sector as well as introduction of the post of Project Coordinator and liaison officer to link the chapters and the national executive, redefine membership and reorient the mission of CAMASEJ in order to keep pace with changes in the craft, art and practice.
