Within the framework of activities to mark the 35th
International Women’s Day in Cameroon, some over 1500 women undertook a walking
exercise along the streets of Yaounde, on Thursday 5 March 2020.
The
sports walk that brought together female military and civilian personnel of the
defence and security forces, customs, penitentiary administration and forestry
and wildlife, as well as the spouses of authorities and personel of the
above-mentioned administrations, was organized by the 1st Military Sector in
Yaounde.
The
commandant of the 1st military sector, Colonel Ayukegba Benedict Etchu and the
director of military sports, gave the kick-off for the Sports walk, that took
the women from the military stadium through some major streets of the capital
city and back to the Military Stadium.
This
3rd edition of the celebration of women’s day through sports was crowned with
resounding success, especially as it witnessed the participation of over 1500
women, far above the 1000 women that were expected for the event.
At the
end of the long march, some of the women who spoke to this reporter, thanked
the minister of defence for giving them the opportunity to come together and
celebrate the Cameroonian woman.
Many
admitted that the sports walk was a refreshing and body-toning exercise.
The
women prayed the minister to include the sports walk as a regular feature in
the ministry’s yearly programs.
